Reykjavik vs Tirana: a €95 flight gap hides a €410 trip gap
VeraTrip — figures checked by hand from Warsaw
Here are two trips you could book from Warsaw this week. Four nights each, one person, travelling cheap: a hostel dorm, food you mostly cook or grab from a bakery, public transport, a couple of paid things to do.
One is a €180 flight. The other is €85. A flight search will tell you Reykjavik costs about €95 more — and it's right. But that €95 is a rounding error next to what the two trips actually cost.
4 nights each, from Warsaw. Fares typical (checked 2026-07-22); ground costs estimated ranges.
TiranaAlbania
- Flight, return (typical)
- €85
- Whole trip
- €201-275
ReykjavikIceland
- Flight, return (typical)
- €180
- Whole trip
- €540-760
The flights sit €95 apart. The whole trips sit about €412 apart — 2.7×. That gap is the whole point.
The flight to Reykjavik costs €95 more. The trip costs roughly €410 more. The fare captured less than a quarter of the real gap.
Where the €410 actually hides
The flight is the one number both sites and airlines quote you, because it's the one number they can charge you for. Everything after you land — the part that is most of the cost — is left as an exercise for the traveller. So here it is, line by line.

Tirana is one of the most consistent cheap cities in Europe — sources barely disagree, which is why its range is tight. A dorm bed is €12–18. You can eat well for well under €20 a day. The whole four nights, flight included, lands around €201–275.

Reykjavik is the opposite: a genuinely expensive city where budget-travel sources swing wildly, because there is no cheap version of some of it. A dorm is €40–60. Food is €35–55 a day even self-catering, because the groceries themselves are dear. The four nights come to roughly €540–760 — and that's the budget version, before a single glacier tour.
Why the ranges overlap, and why that's honest
Notice that the numbers are ranges, not neat single figures. Reykjavik's is wide — €540 to €760 — because honest sources genuinely disagree about a city like it by that much. Pretending we could name one exact number would be inventing precision the data doesn't have. Tirana's range is narrow because the sources actually agree. The shape of the uncertainty is information too.
Neither of these is a live price. The flight figures are typical fares we checked by hand on Google Flights on 22 July 2026, used only to rank the two honestly; for today's real fare, both destination pages hand off to Google Flights. The ground costs are researched estimates, good to about ±20%.
The point
This is the entire idea behind VeraTrip. The fare is a fraction of the trip, and often a misleading one — yet it's the number everything gets ranked by, because it's the only part someone's trying to sell you. Price the whole thing — flight, bed, food, transport, the tourist taxes nobody warns you about — and the ranking frequently flips.
That's what the map on the front page does for every destination we track, and it's what the email does when a trip is genuinely worth the flight.
